About “The Bleeding Class”
When a mysterious plague throws society into chaos, it results in an unlikely alliance between the reserved Dr. Pennington and a strong-willed escort named Sugar, whose immune system may hold the key to saving the world.
Sugar and Dr. Pennington trade personal barbs and professional observations as they race to find a cure, but there’s something more important than human life at stake – money.
Funny and fast-paced, The Bleeding Class combines science fiction, thriller, and camp to ask: What would you do, and who would you be, if everything was on the line?
Made possible with additional support from our associate producers, other generous donors, and supporting organizations.

“Superb production”
Thinking Theater NYC
“Chisa Hutchinson’s dialogue is inflected with humor and whimsy that are enhanced by Cezar Williams’ s direction and the work of his design team.”
The New York Sun
“Deftly synthesizing its multi-generic influences, The Bleeding Class ensures that you won’t be immune to either its many pleasures or its message.
Thinking Theater NYC
“Leading lady Tamar Lopez, in a winning off-Broadway debut, emphasizes Sugar’s spice; lean and long-legged, she strides the stage like she owns it, offering a stark contrast to Reginald L. Barnes’s earnest, charmingly awkward Dr. Pennington.”
The New York Sun
“Astounding!” | “That was wild!” | “Great show!” | “Fantastic!”

Playwright Chisa Hutchinson
“I started this play in 2019, months before an actual pandemic hit. It was meant to be a commentary on capitalist greed and highlight folks who tend to get dehumanized by it.“
